Mr. Peter is one of my foreign students. This is the photo which we supposed to take it on last Monday, he looks smart, how about me?
Peter is a great student in my mind, as a teacher, I feel very lucky to be his teacher. Teaching is not easy, especially in teaching foreigners; he is the top students among them all. He always gets prepared before our class and tries to make the class easier for me. Occasionally he has no time to prepare things from the book, he will suggest me to review or just do some oral lesson. For his homework, it is always much better than I expected.
We’ve been learning Chinese together for 15 months, and we do twice a week. He seldom cancels lessons except business trip. Actually, I wondered how he can manage his time so well, time for family, time for work, and time for study. We don’t have much time for small talk, but sometimes he mentioned his family, his daughters and his wife. They are lucky women in the world. I really believe Peter is a great father and husband. To be a general manager for a company, he treats his staff very good. I am not his staff, but I am young too, so he said in his work, he is like a father. And he compared me with his daughters sometimes. He doesn’t like to be a tough person in order to manage people. He likes to guide them to the right way of working, to be a helper, not a master. He believes that everyone is his own master. Actually, he is right. Only you know why to do, you know how to do.
He said he will miss Teda as a small town. He likes the quiet life; he enjoys walking on the street and say hello to the same strangers on his way to work and home. The same strangers mean that they don’t really know each other, but always meet on the street.
He said he will miss a street vendor, the guy knows what he wants and sell in pieces, and most Chinese people like to sell things in Jin which means 500grams. He likes bananas, I guess, because he mentioned that he bought bananas there. He likes apples, I guess, because he takes an apple for lunch on some day. He said he likes to keep fit, and I think he is in good fit now.
He said the 3rd avenue will be the image of Teda in his mind. That is the busiest place in Teda.
He mentioned some western restaurants he likes, but I forgot the names now.
I asked him what will he miss after his leaving, he said it’s a good question and also hard to answer. He will miss many small places; he said living here is like living in the place he wants. Just walk to the some places, shopping center, restaurants, CD shops, and be immersed in people on the street. He said that’s the sense of life.
I said I would like to have a photo with him on Monday, he said he will dress smart for my photo. But he canceled the class because he has to go to shanghai. I am doing my own business and it’s so small, Peter encouraged me and he helped me a lot too.
When I think of his leaving, I feel that I am in tears. That’s people. When we have good friends, we hope we will be together forever. But the whole world is moving all the time. We have to move, we have to change, we have to accept our hard time of being away from the one we love, we have to put some good memories in our mind and find a place for someone….keep in touch, maybe just say hello, look forward to meet again….we are lucky enough to know each other, and let’s spend the rest of our time to remember the great friendship.
By the way, he knows over two thousand Chinese characters, he is great! He’ got no time to practice listing and speaking, he speaks Chinese with taxi drivers, waitress and shop assistants, he said most of them can understand him well.
We did some work on the company’s annual speech at lunch time, he said , we chinese people like to say" work hard", and they like to say "work smart" to the staff. For him, if this year is success enough , he hopes to keep on going, keep the same level, as good as what we’ve done is ok. But chinese leaders like to say we will overcome the last one and make it better and better in the future, what’s the difference? Maybe the standard of the way we are doing. Expectation should be in an extent based on the truth, not too much. I am lucky to be his teacher, on the other hand, I learnt lot of things from him too.
